Measure ROI of UX

UX designers must make a strong case as to why a redesign project is needed. The UX team should show:

  • what needs to be done

  • how they are going to do it

  • what requirements will it take

  • how long it will take

  • how much will it cost

  • the projected ROI based on reasonable assumptions.

Four areas for improvement to elevate the user experience:

  1. Usability (discoverability, navigation, UI standards)

  2. Consistency (UI design, interaction design)

  3. Workflow (user flow, interaction design, efficiency)

  4. Brand perception (quality, trust, confidence)

1 Savings Realized by Improving Usability

Calculating the ROI of UX as a result of a reduction in errors:

      • (# of errors) x (avg. recovery time) @ (employee cost) x (# of employees) = cost savings

      • Example:
        (2 errors/week) x (60 mins) @ ($30/hour) x (100 employees) = $6,000/week or about $300,000/year in cost savings

2 Savings Realized by Consistency in UX

3 Savings Realized by Workflow Improvements

Calculating the ROI of UX in boosted productivity:

  • (time saved) @ (employee cost) x (# of employees) = cost savings

  • Example:
    (1 hr/week) @ ($30/hr) x (1000 employees) = $30,000/ week or about $1,500,000/year in cost savings

4 Savings Realized by Brand Perception
